Among numerous other awards that the TravelSmart site has earned recently including the ‘Transportation Standard of Excellence’, from the Web Marketing Associations Web Awards http://ow.ly6GuPv, the site was recognized as Communication Arts Web Pick of the Day yesterday.

FCV is always honoured by the attention bestowed on some of the work that we are super proud to have been a part of.  We are also big fans of the beautiful sites that Communication Arts recognizes on a regular basis so we thought we’d talk to some of the team to get a sense of why TravelSmart was such a powerful project.

We grabbed Sam Fu (Designer) and Shawn Rafuse (Interaction Architect) and asked them to run us through their views on why the site is so effective.

Sam Fu: From a design perspective it’s clean, audience-focused and delivers an interactive landing page that gets straight to the point ‘Travel Smart!
The site was built with enough contrast for those with vision problems and colour blindness to easily find their way while the brand is invitingly integrated throughout the site without distracting the user from vital information or functionality.
Shawn Rafuse:
I think the secret is in the integration of great design and the use of an extremely functional grid pattern that is clear and easy to navigate throughout the entire site. The "news portal" style allows flexibility for growth and effortless content management on the backend while each user category/section is colour labeled according to their corresponding brand colour, enabling users to easily find the information they need.

With an interactive trip planning map, vibrant calls to action and inclusive tone, the site has delivered 9000 registered users in its first 6 months of operation. So the proof is in the pudding that Design x IA x UX = Effective web design. Building on this success we are pushing the bounds of traditional web design by bringing UX, IA, and Designers in together at the beginning of all new project kick offs to ensure that our Design is functional, and our functional elements are integrated as beautifully as they are on

What do you think?

Did we hit the nail on the head? We want to know.
