The Big Wild

Challenge:

Founded by Mountain Equipment Co-op and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, The Big Wild is a conservation movement that makes it easy for Canadians to stand up for Canadian wilderness protection campaigns. With a mandate to protect Canada’s precious public land and water, Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) wanted a website to inspire Canadians to participate in the preservation of the Canadian wilderness. Their existing site content suggested some common trips but it was a challenge to keep it fresh and interesting enough for people to make a return visit.

Solution:

Existing content was migrated from the clients’ old .NET platform to the Drupal content management system to allow users to create accounts, upload photographs, videos and links to share, discuss and connect with other members. Star ratings, popular views and categorization filters all make it easier to find locations and activities that are preferable to the user. With new social media tools, people are able to meet, talk and challenge each other to outdoor adventures, as per the client’s aims.

At the back-end, the solution allows for easy moderation of comments, content and multi-language features. It has an efficient workflow, so that the client can focus on strategic guidance and targeted communications, now that they have better information about their visitors and their interests.

Results:

One month in, the website had over 10,000 posts, 500 members and it’s still growing! The site has become a content-rich forum where adventurers can share their stories, photographs and videos as well as create challenges with other people in the Big Wild. From a flat site that was B2C, this solution really has offered better engagement and generated more interest with C2C content and lively, inspiring discussions.
