Richmond Olympic Oval

  • “The greatest compliment I can give an agency is to say that I felt secure in your hands. And I did. The FCV team have been spectacular.”

Richmond Olympic Oval

Challenge:

Richmond Olympic Oval received a lot of media attention during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games as the setting for long-track speed skating events, but it needed to promote the venue as a multi-sport facility to its local community. Behind the scenes, we needed to conceptualize, develop, test and launch the project in a short time frame, incorporating three different agencies with design, technology and operational interdependencies.

Solution:

All the people who visited the microsite saw instantly what the Richmond Olympic Oval would host for locals after the Olympics. The interactive and highly visual site showcased the facilities on offer for people getting into fitness all the way up to professional athletes.

Elements included a competition, designed to encourage return visits post-Olympics, and an interactive social media component which prompted people to revisit after launch and a video to further promote the venue and depict what it would be like the in the future.

To make the solution in time for the Olympics the technology and interface were being developed (by FCV), videos were being produced (by Academy) and the competition mechanics were being built (by Tagga) simultaneously - all of which had to have the same look and feel to blend cohesively together.

Results:

During the campaign 18% of visitors entered the competition and more than 1800 people won day passes to the venue, encouraging them to come and see for themselves all of the facilities available at re-launch. 5% created some online art and shared it with their social media networks.

The client was delighted that a project previously thought impossible was pulled delivered on time, with three collaborating agencies.
